Blood and Pearls

Chapter 1: The Sound of Pearls Hitting Water

*Present Day - August 15, 2024*

The yacht winch handle was still slick with blood when Sofia Restrepo let it slip from her fingers into the crystalline waters of Lyford Cay. She watched it sink past the coral reef, past the tropical fish that scattered like guilt, down into the darkness where her grandfather's bones had rested for eighty-one years.

"It's finished, Abuelo," she whispered to the Caribbean wind.

Behind her, Marina Vanderbilt's body lay sprawled across the pristine white deck of the *Pristine Pearl*, her skull cracked open like a coconut, the legendary Restrepo pearls scattered around her like tears from heaven. The necklace that had been stolen from Sofia's family in 1943 was finally coming home, one way or another.

Sofia's hands trembled as she gathered the pearls, each one warm from Marina's throat just moments before. The largest pearl, the centerpiece her great-grandmother had died diving for, was stained with blood. She held it up to the afternoon sun, and for a moment, she could swear she heard the ocean singing her family's song of justice.

The plan had taken three years to execute. Three years of becoming someone else, of seducing her way into this family, of playing the role of Sofia Restrepo, estate appraiser extraordinaire. But her real name was Isabel Esperanza Santos-Restrepo, great-granddaughter of the pearl diver who'd been murdered for refusing to give up his family's treasure to the Vanderbilt patriarch.

She'd studied their patterns, their weaknesses, their schedules. She'd learned that Marina always came to the yacht alone on Thursday afternoons to "think about grandmother's legacy." She'd discovered that the family kept the pearls in the yacht's safe, bringing them out only for special occasions or when buyers came to inspect them.

Most importantly, she'd learned that Jackson Vanderbilt, Marina's husband, was desperately unhappy in his marriage and magnificently susceptible to a beautiful woman who listened to his problems.

The sound of footsteps on the dock made her freeze. Jackson's voice carried across the water: "Marina? Darling, are you ready for dinner?"

Sofia smiled, slipping the pearls into her designer purse. Phase two was about to begin.

She climbed down into the yacht's cabin, messed up her hair, and unbuttoned her blouse just enough to suggest impropriety. When Jackson's shadow fell across the deck above, she began to scream.

"Help! Oh God, someone help! She's dead! Marina's dead!"

Jackson's footsteps thundered across the deck. "What? Sofia, what are you doing here? Where's—oh Jesus Christ!"

Sofia emerged from the cabin, tears streaming down her face, her lipstick smudged strategically. "I came to return the appraisal documents, and I found her like this! Jackson, I'm so sorry, I tried to help her, but there was so much blood—"

Jackson knelt beside his wife's body, his face white with shock. "What happened? Did she fall? Did someone—"

"I don't know!" Sofia sobbed, allowing herself to fall into his arms. "I just got here and found her. We should call the police."

As Jackson held her, she could feel his wedding ring pressing against her back, and she thought of her grandfather's hands, how they'd been broken by the Vanderbilt family's hired thugs when he'd refused to give up the pearl beds. How her great-grandmother had died of a broken heart, watching her husband's killers sail away with their treasure.

"It's okay," Jackson murmured into her hair. "Everything's going to be okay."

Sofia closed her eyes and smiled. No, Jackson. Everything was finally going to be perfect.

The police would come. They'd find no evidence of foul play—just a tragic accident where Marina had slipped on the wet deck and hit her head on the winch. The pearls would be declared part of the estate, and as the appraiser, Sofia would recommend they be sold to cover the massive debts Marina had been hiding from her husband.

Sofia would buy them herself, through a shell company, at auction. And then Isabel Esperanza Santos-Restrepo would finally take her family's treasure home to Colombia, where it belonged.

But first, she had a grieving widower to comfort. After all, Jackson Vanderbilt still owed her family a debt, and Sofia intended to collect every last drop of interest.

She pulled back to look into his eyes, her fingers already working on the buttons of his shirt. "Jackson, we shouldn't be alone together. Not like this. People might think—"

"I don't care what people think," he said roughly, pulling her closer. "I need you, Sofia. I've needed you since the day you walked into our lives."

Perfect. The hook was set so deep he'd never escape.

As the sun set over Lyford Cay, painting the water the color of blood and pearls, Sofia let Jackson Vanderbilt make love to her on the deck where his wife lay cooling. And with every kiss, every touch, every whispered promise, she felt her grandfather's spirit settling into peace.

The Restrepo pearls were coming home. And the Vanderbilt family was about to pay the ultimate price for their ancestors' sins.
