The Inheritance Puppeteer

Chapter 1: The Singapore Diversion

Thirty-six thousand feet above Asia, Renji stared at the sealed envelope Lady Ashworth had pressed into his hands three hours earlier. Whatever secrets it contained about the European network would have to wait—his phone was ringing with a Singapore number, and the voice on the other end was desperate enough to pay triple his usual fee.

"Mr. Min, thank God you answered." The woman's accent carried the polished edges of international education layered over native Mandarin. "My name is Sophia Lim. I need you in Singapore immediately."

Renji adjusted his Tom Ford cufflinks, a gesture that had become automatic during stressful conversations. Through the private jet's window, city lights scattered across the darkness below like scattered diamonds. "Ms. Lim, I'm currently en route to Seoul. Perhaps we could schedule—"

"My grandfather is about to marry a twenty-six-year-old Instagram influencer and disinherit his entire family." Her voice cracked slightly. "The wedding is in forty-eight hours. After that, two billion dollars and four generations of family legacy disappear into the hands of a woman who met him six weeks ago."

The pilot's voice crackled through the intercom: "Mr. Min, we're beginning our descent into Seoul. Please prepare for landing."

Renji made a decision that would complicate his life in ways he couldn't yet imagine. "Captain, change of plans. Set course for Singapore immediately."

"Sir, that will require new flight clearances, fuel calculations—"

"Handle it." Renji turned his attention back to the phone. "Ms. Lim, you have my attention. Tell me about your grandfather."

"Lim Boon Heng. You may have heard of him."

Renji's grip tightened on the phone. Everyone in Asia's business circles knew that name—the founder of Oceania Industries, Singapore's largest private conglomerate. Real estate, shipping, technology, pharmaceuticals. The kind of old money that had built modern Singapore from colonial trading post to global financial center.

"I know of him, yes. Highly respected businessman, philanthropist. Never married, no children that I'm aware of."

"That's where you're wrong." Sophia's laugh held no humor. "Grandfather has been very careful about family privacy, but he has two children from a relationship in the 1970s. My father, David Lim, and my aunt, Helen Lim-Chen. When grandfather dies, his empire was supposed to pass to his children and grandchildren."

"And now?"

"Now he's convinced that Melody Zhang—that's the influencer—is his soulmate, destined love, whatever romantic nonsense she's been feeding him. Yesterday, he called his lawyers to rewrite his will. Everything goes to his new bride."

The jet banked sharply as the pilot adjusted course, and Renji felt the familiar thrill of a new case beginning. But something about Sophia's story bothered him—too convenient, too dramatic, too perfectly timed.

"Ms. Lim, why contact me specifically? Singapore has excellent private investigators, many with local knowledge that I lack."

"Because this isn't just about one old man and one gold-digger. We think Melody Zhang is part of something larger—a systematic targeting of Singapore's elderly elite. In the past six months, three other prominent families have faced similar situations. Elderly patriarchs suddenly falling for much younger women, changing wills, disinheriting children."

Renji's mind immediately went to patterns, connections, the kind of systematic fraud that required organization and planning. "Have these other families taken legal action?"

"That's the problem. In each case, the elderly person genuinely believes they're in love. They're mentally competent, legally capable of making their own decisions. The law can't protect people from bad romantic choices."

"But you think there's fraud involved."

"I know there's fraud involved. Mr. Min, I need someone who understands both family dynamics and financial crime. Someone who can get close to grandfather, earn his trust, and expose what's really happening before it's too late."

The jet's engines shifted to a different pitch as they climbed to a new flight path. Through the window, Renji could see the scattered lights of a major city—probably Hong Kong or Shenzhen. In a few hours, he'd be in Singapore, diving into a case that felt both familiar and completely foreign.

"My usual consultation fee for international cases is fifty thousand US dollars," he said. "Plus expenses."

"Done. I'll transfer the money before you land."

"And access? If your grandfather is as besotted as you describe, he won't appreciate family members bringing in investigators."

"Leave that to me. Tomorrow night, grandfather is hosting a private viewing at his penthouse. Contemporary Southeast Asian art, very exclusive. I can get you an invitation as a collector from Seoul."

Renji smiled. Art world infiltration—exactly the kind of cover that had worked so well in Seoul. "And if I discover that your grandfather is genuinely in love, and Melody Zhang is exactly who she appears to be?"

Silence stretched across the connection for several seconds. When Sophia spoke again, her voice was smaller, more vulnerable. "Then I'll accept that four generations of family legacy isn't as important as an old man's happiness. But Mr. Min... I don't think that's what we'll find."

After ending the call, Renji stared at Lady Ashworth's envelope again. The London meeting felt like a lifetime ago, though only hours had passed. She'd spoken of networks, connections, people who used romance as a weapon for theft. Now he was flying into what might be exactly that kind of operation.

Or he might be flying into a family dispute where entitled children couldn't accept their grandfather's late-life happiness.

The distinction, he knew, would make all the difference.

His phone buzzed with a text from Sophia: _Grandfather's penthouse. Marina Bay Sands, Tower 3, Floor 55. Tomorrow, 8 PM. You're Dr. Renji Min, Seoul art collector specializing in Korean antiquities. Grandfather loves discussing cultural preservation._

Another message followed immediately: _One more thing—be careful around Melody. She's not what she seems. None of them ever are._

_None of them._ The phrase suggested this wasn't Sophia's first encounter with suspicious relationships in her family circle. Renji made a mental note to investigate the Lim family's romantic history more thoroughly.

The captain's voice returned: "Mr. Min, we'll be landing in Singapore in approximately ninety minutes. Local time will be 11:30 PM."

Renji closed his eyes, letting his mind organize the limited information he had. Elderly billionaire, young influencer, family inheritance, systematic targeting of other elite families. The pattern felt familiar from his Seoul cases, but Singapore's cultural and legal landscape would bring new complications.

When he opened his eyes, the city lights below had resolved into the unmistakable shape of Singapore's skyline—the Marina Bay Sands' distinctive boat-shaped top structure, the Singapore Flyer observation wheel, the geometric precision of a city-state that had transformed itself through careful planning and relentless ambition.

In less than twenty-four hours, he'd be in Lim Boon Heng's penthouse, playing the role of an art collector while investigating whether the man's late-life romance was genuine or the product of sophisticated manipulation.

As the jet began its final descent, Renji realized he was looking forward to the challenge. Singapore's elite operated by different rules than Seoul's, and understanding those differences would be crucial to solving whatever was really happening in the Lim family.

His phone rang again—different number, local Singapore area code.

"Mr. Min?" The voice was young, female, nervous. "This is Melody Zhang. I think we need to talk before you meet Mr. Lim tomorrow night. There are things about this situation that his granddaughter doesn't understand."

Renji's pulse quickened. "Ms. Zhang, how did you get this number?"

"I have my ways. Mr. Min, I know who you are and why you're coming to Singapore. But you need to know—I'm not the enemy here. If you want to understand what's really happening to Singapore's elderly elite, meet me tomorrow afternoon. Raffles Hotel, Long Bar, 3 PM."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then an innocent old man dies, his granddaughter inherits nothing, and the real criminals disappear with two billion dollars while you chase shadows."

The line went dead, leaving Renji staring at his phone as Singapore's lights grew larger through the jet's windows. In Seoul, he'd learned that the most dangerous cases were those where everyone claimed to be the victim.

In Singapore, it seemed, everyone claimed to be the hero.

The jet touched down at Changi Airport with barely a bump, and as Renji gathered his belongings, he felt the familiar weight of a case that was already more complicated than it appeared.

Lady Ashworth's envelope crinkled in his jacket pocket—a reminder that some mysteries connected across continents and cultures. But first, he had to determine whether Lim Boon Heng was an old man in love or an old man being systematically destroyed by people who knew exactly how to exploit both loneliness and wealth.

Outside the jet's windows, Singapore waited with its blend of old traditions and new money, where fortunes could be made overnight and lost just as quickly to those who understood the human heart's weaknesses.

Tomorrow, he'd begin learning which category Melody Zhang belonged to.
