Chapter 1: Takeoff
FLIGHT TK1847 - ISTANBUL TO MINSK Seat 14A - Maya Chen 12:43 PM Local Time
My hands are shaking as I type this. I'm 30,000 feet above Turkey, and I think someone in my travel group committed murder.
Let me back up. I'm Maya Chen, @Maya_Wanderlust on Instagram (47K followers, thank you very much), and I've been documenting a week-long "Hidden Gems of Turkey" tour for my travel blog. Seven strangers, one tour guide, and enough drama to fill a Netflix series.
Until this morning, the biggest problem was trying not to fall for David Kim, the mysterious photographer in seat 14B who's been making my heart do acrobatics every time he smiles at me.
Now David might be a murderer.

WHATSAPP GROUP: "Turkey Squad 🇹🇷" *Created 6 days ago*
Mehmet (Tour Guide): Welcome everyone! Excited for our week together. First stop: Sultanahmet district for authentic Turkish breakfast!
Sarah: OMG this is going to be amazing for content! 📸✨
Mike: Looking forward to the hiking portions. Heard Cappadocia is incredible.
Elena: Will we have reliable wifi at all locations? I have important work calls.
David: @Maya saw your blog about Korean food markets. We should compare notes on food photography.
Maya: *[Heart racing as I read this]* Definitely! Always looking for new techniques.
Tom: Lisa and I are so grateful to be here. 30th anniversary trip! 💕
Lisa: Can't wait to see the hot air balloons! 🎈
Elena: Are we staying at business-class hotels? I specifically requested upgraded accommodations.
Mehmet: All accommodations are carefully selected for authentic experiences and comfort.
TRAVEL BLOG DRAFT - "Day 1: First Impressions" *Written on phone, never published*
Okay, I need to document this because either I'm losing my mind or there's something seriously weird about this group.
Elena Kozlov (tech executive from Belarus, apparently) has been on her laptop NON-STOP since we landed. Like, we're at the Blue Mosque, one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and she's typing furiously while everyone else is taking pictures. When Mehmet asked her to put it away for the guided tour, she snapped at him in what sounded like Russian.
David offered to take photos of her with the mosque in the background, and she practically hissed at him. "No pictures. I don't do social media." Which, fine, but who goes on a tour group if they don't want any photos?
The weird part: I caught David taking pictures of Elena anyway. Not obvious ones, but with that telephoto lens he's always carrying. When I asked him about it, he just said he likes to capture "candid moments of people experiencing places for the first time."
Maybe I'm overthinking it. Maybe he just likes documenting real reactions instead of posed shots. God knows I take enough of those for Instagram.
But something about the way he was watching her... like he was studying her instead of photographing her.
I really hope I'm wrong because David Kim is absolutely gorgeous and we have this chemistry that's making it hard to concentrate on anything else.

> Video: Turkish bath experience in Cagaloglu Hamami > > *Maya whispering to camera:* "Guys, I'm about to get the most authentic Turkish bath experience and I'm slightly terrified 😅 Will report back if I survive!" > > *Background audio catches Elena's voice:* "—need those files transferred before Friday or the entire deal falls through—" > > *Then David's voice:* "Ma'am, this is a hammam. Maybe take the call outside?" > > *Elena, sharply:* "Mind your own business, photographer."

WHATSAPP GROUP: "Turkey Squad 🇹🇷" *Day 3, Evening*
Mehmet: Tomorrow early start for hot air balloons! Pickup at 4:30 AM. Dress warm!
Sarah: 4:30 AM?? The things we do for content 😴
Maya: So worth it! Can't wait!
David: @Maya want to share a basket? I can help with photos if you want to be IN some shots instead of always behind the camera.
Maya: *[Internal screaming]* That would be amazing! Thank you!
Elena: I won't be joining. I have important work to complete.
Mike: Missing hot air balloons for work? That's dedication.
Elena: Some of us have responsibilities beyond vacation photos.
Tom: Each to their own. Lisa and I are beyond excited!
Lisa: Tom's afraid of heights but he's doing it for me! 🥰
Mehmet: Weather forecast is perfect. Going to be magical morning!
VOICE MEMO - Maya's Phone *Day 3, 11:47 PM - Recorded in hotel room*
"Note to self: Elena is definitely up to something. I went to get ice from the machine down the hall and I heard her on what sounded like a super intense phone call in her room. She was speaking Russian, I think, but she kept switching to English when she got really angry.
I caught bits of it: 'The prototype specs must be transferred tonight' and 'If we don't move now, the Americans will—' and then she saw me through the peephole and went completely silent.
Also, David's room is right next to hers, and his light was on but I didn't hear anything. Which is weird because he's been editing photos until like 2 AM every night—his keyboard clicking always comes through the walls.
Maybe I should just ask him directly what's going on. We're sharing that hot air balloon tomorrow morning and I really want to trust him.
But something feels wrong about this whole situation."

WHATSAPP GROUP: "Turkey Squad 🇹🇷" *Day 4, 7:15 AM*
Maya: Just landed from the most incredible balloon ride! David got the most amazing shots!
David: Maya was the perfect co-pilot. Natural at this.
Sarah: Ugh so jealous! My alarm didn't go off 😭
Mike: Beautiful morning for it. Saw your balloon from the ground.
Tom: Lisa and I loved every second! Bucket list item ✅
Lisa: The pilot was so skilled! Felt completely safe.
Mehmet: Breakfast waiting at hotel. Then we explore underground cities!
Maya: Has anyone seen Elena? She missed breakfast.
Mehmet: I will check on her.
Mike: Probably working. That woman never stops.
David: Should we wait for her?
Mehmet: We keep to schedule. She can join us later.
WHATSAPP PRIVATE MESSAGE *David to Maya - Day 4, 9:33 AM*
David: Last night was amazing. Thank you for trusting me in the balloon.
Maya: Thank you for making me feel safe up there. I'm usually terrified of heights!
David: There's something I need to tell you about why I'm really here.
Maya: That sounds ominous...
David: Can we talk privately later? Away from the group?
Maya: Now I'm nervous. Good nervous or bad nervous?
David: Hopefully good. But it's complicated.
Maya: I do complicated well. Try me.
David: Tonight. After dinner. Meet me at the hotel bar?
Maya: It's a date. 💕

Mehmet: Everyone please remain calm. There has been incident with Elena. Police are coming.
Sarah: What kind of incident?? Is she okay???
Mike: Just saw ambulance. What happened?
Maya: Oh my god is she hurt?
Tom: Lisa and I are in lobby. Police everywhere.
David: Is there anything we can do to help?

> Text post on black background: > "Something terrible has happened on our trip. I can't share details yet but please send good thoughts to Elena's family. Some things are bigger than travel content. Will update when I can. 💔"
VOICE MEMO - Maya's Phone *Day 5, 8:15 AM - Hotel lobby*
"I can't stop shaking. Elena is dead. The police are saying it looks like she fell and hit her head in her bathroom, but something doesn't feel right.
David has been so weird since they told us. He keeps asking specific questions about the timeline, about who saw what when. And the police keep asking about his key card being used to access her room.
He told them he was doing a wellness check because she'd missed dinner and breakfast, but why would he have access to her room? When did she give him a key card?
I want to believe him. God, I want to believe him so badly. But the way he's acting...
The tour is obviously over. They're flying us all back to Istanbul today and then we go our separate ways. David keeps trying to talk to me privately but honestly I'm scared to be alone with him right now.
What if I've been flirting with a murderer for five days?"
POLICE INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT *Nevşehir Police Department - Day 5, 10:30 AM* *Interviewee: David Kim* *Translator: Present*
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: Mr. Kim, your key card was used to access Ms. Kozlov's room at 11:52 PM. Please explain.
DAVID KIM: Elena had been acting strangely all week. Missing meals, avoiding the group. When she didn't come to dinner, I was concerned about her welfare.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: How did you obtain access to her room?
DAVID KIM: She had given me a spare key card earlier in the day. She asked me to check on her if she didn't respond to calls, said she sometimes worked late with headphones and didn't hear knocking.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: When exactly did she give you this card?
DAVID KIM: Around 3 PM, after we returned from the underground cities.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: Any witnesses to this?
DAVID KIM: I don't think so. It was brief, in the hallway.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: What did you find when you entered her room?
DAVID KIM: She was already unconscious in the bathroom. I checked for a pulse, called for help immediately.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: The hotel staff report they received no emergency call from room 237.
DAVID KIM: I... I ran to get the front desk instead of calling. I was panicked.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: Mr. Kim, are you a professional photographer as you claimed?
DAVID KIM: Yes. Among other things.
DETECTIVE YILMAZ: What other things?
DAVID KIM: I'd prefer to speak with someone from the American consulate before answering further questions.
FLIGHT TK1847 - MAYA'S PHONE NOTES *12:58 PM - Current time*
I need to figure this out before we land in Minsk. Once we cross into Belarus airspace in 2 hours and 17 minutes, David will be outside EU jurisdiction. If he really killed Elena, he could disappear forever.
But what if he didn't do it? What if I'm about to let the real killer get away because I'm too scared to trust my feelings?
I've been going through all my photos and videos from the trip. Every Instagram post, every Snapchat, every WhatsApp message. There has to be something I missed.
Timeline of last night: - 6 PM: Group dinner (Elena didn't come) - 8 PM: Back to hotel (everyone went to their rooms) - 11:47 PM: David's key card accessed Elena's room - 11:52 PM: He used his own card to enter - 12:03 AM: Exit recorded - 6:15 AM: Elena found dead
Wait.
Something's wrong with this timeline.
Let me check my posts again...
*[Maya frantically scrolls through her phone]*
FLIGHT TK1847 - MAYA'S PHONE NOTES *1:23 PM*
OH MY GOD.
I found it. The piece that proves David is innocent.
But it also means Elena didn't die accidentally.
Someone killed her. And that someone is on this plane with us right now.
