Chapter 1: Hour One - The Game Begins
*11:00 AM - Punta Mita Resort & Marina*
The blowgun dart hit Carlos Mendoza in the neck just as he raised his margarita in celebration, the feathered projectile piercing his sun-bronzed skin with a soft *thock* that was barely audible over the mariachi band playing poolside.
"Did you see that?" Tommy Chen shouted with delight, lowering his replica Aztec blowgun with a huge grin. "Direct hit! I told you guys I was getting good at this cultural demonstration thing."
The resort guests around the infinity pool applauded politely as Carlos staggered backward, his eyes wide with confusion. The dart wobbled comically from his neck like a tiny arrow, decorated with authentic-looking feathers that the resort's activities director had assured everyone were "totally safe replicas of ancient Aztec hunting tools."
"Very funny, Tommy," Carlos laughed, reaching up to pluck out the dart. "But next time aim for the—"
His words cut off abruptly. His hand froze halfway to his neck, trembling like a leaf in a hurricane. His margarita glass slipped from his fingers and shattered on the deck, sending lime and tequila splashing across the expensive travertine.
Dr. Sarah Chen, Tommy's older sister and the resort's resident maritime archaeologist, looked up from her laptop with a frown. Something was wrong. Carlos's face had gone ashen, his breathing shallow and rapid. Those weren't the symptoms of someone playing along with a game.
"Carlos?" Sarah called, rising from her lounge chair. "Are you okay?"
Carlos tried to answer, but only a strangled whisper emerged. His legs buckled, and he collapsed backward into the resort's centerpiece fountain with a splash that sent water cascading over shocked tourists.
"Oh shit, oh shit!" Tommy dropped the blowgun and rushed toward the fountain. "I didn't mean to— it was just a game! The activities guy said it was totally safe!"
Sarah reached Carlos first, plunging into the knee-deep fountain water in her designer sundress. His body was rigid, muscles locked in some kind of paralysis, but his eyes were moving frantically, terrified and aware. Whatever was happening to him, he could see and hear everything.
"Call 911!" Sarah shouted to the growing crowd of onlookers. "Call an ambulance now!"
She grabbed Carlos's wrist, checking for a pulse. It was there but erratic, skipping beats like a broken record. His breathing was becoming more labored by the second, his lips taking on a blue tinge that made Sarah's blood run cold.
"What's happening to him?" Tommy was hyperventilating now, his hands shaking as he stared at the man he'd apparently poisoned with a children's toy. "The dart was from the resort! It was supposed to be safe! They said it was just for demonstration!"
Sarah's mind raced through everything she knew about toxicology from her dive medicine training. Rapid onset paralysis, respiratory distress, consciousness maintained... "Neurotoxin," she breathed. "Tommy, that dart was poisoned."
"That's impossible! I got it from the activities center! Miguel Herrera set up the whole demonstration!"
Miguel Herrera. Sarah's stomach dropped as she remembered the man who'd been hanging around the resort for the past week, claiming to be a "cultural enrichment coordinator" specializing in pre-Columbian demonstrations. He'd seemed legitimate enough—good credentials, professional setup, enthusiastic about educating tourists on Aztec hunting techniques.
But now Carlos Mendoza was dying from a poison dart that should have been a harmless toy, and Miguel Herrera was nowhere to be seen.
"Where is Miguel now?" Sarah demanded, continuing chest compressions as Carlos's breathing became more labored.
"I don't know! He left after setting up the demonstration. Said he had to get more supplies from his car."
The ambulance sirens were getting closer, but Sarah knew they might not arrive in time. Whatever toxin was on that dart was working fast, shutting down Carlos's nervous system with terrifying efficiency.
"Listen to me," she said to Tommy, grabbing his shirt to force him to focus. "I need you to find Miguel Herrera. Find him right now and get him to tell you what poison was on that dart. The doctors are going to need to know what antidote to use."
"But what if he—"
"GO!" Sarah roared, turning back to Carlos as his eyes began to roll back in his head.
Tommy sprinted toward the resort's main building, leaving Sarah alone with a dying man and a growing certainty that what looked like a tragic accident was actually attempted murder.
The question was: who wanted Carlos Mendoza dead badly enough to turn a children's game into an assassination attempt?
As the paramedics finally arrived and took over Carlos's care, Sarah noticed something glinting in the fountain water near where he'd fallen. She scooped it up, hiding it in her palm before anyone could see.
It was a small gold disk, about the size of a coin, engraved with intricate Aztec symbols. The craftsmanship was extraordinary—too extraordinary to be a tourist souvenir. This was authentic pre-Columbian gold, worth a fortune to the right collector.
And it had fallen from Carlos's pocket when he collapsed.
Sarah pocketed the disk and followed the ambulance to her car. Whatever was happening here was bigger than a poisoned dart, bigger than a resort game gone wrong. Carlos Mendoza had been carrying authentic Aztec treasure, and someone had tried to kill him for it.
Now she had six hours before the next ferry arrived from Puerto Vallarta, six hours before this isolated resort would be crawling with federal police and investigators who might not be interested in uncovering inconvenient truths about powerful men and stolen artifacts.
Six hours to find Miguel Herrera, discover what he knew about the poison and the gold, and figure out who wanted Carlos Mendoza dead.
The hunt was on.
