Chapter 1: The Au Pair's First Entry
*From the Private Journal of Emma Laurent*

Ma chère journal,
Today I met the man who will change everything.
Judge Harrison Caldwell opened the door of his Charleston mansion himself—no butler, no housekeeper, just him in his crisp white shirt and navy blazer, looking every inch the Southern gentleman I've read about in novels. He has silver hair that catches the light just so, kind eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, and hands that speak of authority and gentleness in equal measure.
"You must be Emma," he said, and even those simple words sounded like poetry in his Low Country drawl. "Welcome to Charleston."
His wife Margaret barely looked up from her tennis magazine when he introduced us. She's exactly what I expected—blonde highlights that cost more than most people's rent, yoga body maintained by expensive trainers, and the kind of cold beauty that comes from never having to worry about anything real. She treats me like expensive furniture, useful but beneath notice.
"Emma will be wonderful with the children," Harrison told her, and I caught the way his eyes lingered on my face when he said it. "Mrs. Beaumont's recommendation was glowing."
Mrs. Beaumont—the placement agency woman who doesn't know that Emma Laurent is not my real name, doesn't know that I've spent two years crafting this identity specifically to land in this house, with this family, with this man.
The children are sweet. Lily is eight, all curls and curiosity, constantly asking questions about France and whether I've ever seen the Eiffel Tower. Thomas is eleven, quiet and serious like his father, already showing signs of the Caldwell intelligence that built the family fortune. They'll make this easier—loving them won't be pretend.
But Harrison...
When he showed me to my room in the carriage house, he lingered in the doorway, asking about my journey from France, my impressions of Charleston, whether I had everything I needed. His attention felt different from other men's—not predatory or demanding, but genuinely interested. Like I mattered.
"If you need anything at all, Emma, please don't hesitate to ask," he said. "I want you to feel at home here."
Home. When was the last time anywhere felt like home?
Margaret called to him from the main house—something about their dinner reservation—and the spell broke. He smiled apologetically and left me alone with my suitcase and my racing heart.
I unpacked my things carefully, placing my real passport (Amélie Dubois, not Emma Laurent) in the hidden compartment I'd sewn into my jewelry box. My real birth certificate, my real university transcripts, my real life—all locked away so I can become whoever Harrison Caldwell needs me to be.
Because I've been watching this family for months. I know Harrison's schedule, his habits, his preferences. I know he leaves for his morning run at 6 AM sharp, always taking the same route through the historic district. I know he drinks his coffee black, reads three newspapers before breakfast, and has been sleeping in the guest room for six months because Margaret snores.
I know he's unhappy.
I know he's lonely.
And I know exactly how to fix both of those problems.
Margaret thinks she hired an au pair. What she actually hired was the answer to her husband's prayers—a beautiful, intelligent, devoted young woman who will worship the ground he walks on and make him feel like the man he's always wanted to be.
This is going to be so much easier than I thought.
*—Emma*
P.S. - Found the perfect hiding place for this journal. There's a loose board in the carriage house floor, right under my bed. No one will ever think to look there.

Emma: *Bonjour* Harrison! The children are asking if you'll help with Thomas's science project tonight?
Harrison: Of course. What time works?
Emma: After dinner? I could make coffee... that special French blend I mentioned?
Harrison: That sounds perfect. Thank you, Emma.
Emma: *De rien*. It's my pleasure to help your family.
Harrison: You're already so much more than help. You're a blessing.
